About Me
Our Story: Passion, Craft, and the Art of Lutherie
Welcome to the Utah School of Lutherie. This isn’t just a school; it’s the culmination of a lifelong passion for the art and science of instrument making. Founded by master luthier Daryl vanderGroef, our mission is simple: to share the timeless craft of building exceptional acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and ukuleles, one student at a time.
For over a decade, Daryl has honed his skills, creating instruments that are not just beautiful objects, but works of art with a soul. He believes that the process of building an instrument is a journey of discovery—a quiet, focused collaboration between the luthier, the wood, and the music waiting to be born. It’s this belief that forms the heart of our school.
The Utah School of Lutherie Difference
In a world of mass production, we stand for authenticity and quality. Our approach is fundamentally different from other programs. We offer one-on-one, hands-on instruction that provides a personalized learning experience you won’t find anywhere else. Instead of competing for attention in a large group, you’ll receive direct, tailored mentorship from Daryl. He’s there with you through every step, from selecting the finest AAAA-grade tonewoods to mastering the intricate details of shaping, bracing, and finishing.
Our curriculum is comprehensive, flexible, and designed for all skill levels. Whether you’re a complete beginner eager to build your first guitar or an experienced woodworker looking to refine your skills, we provide the knowledge and guidance to help you create an instrument you’ll be proud of for a lifetime.
Your Journey Begins Here
We believe that learning the craft of lutherie is a rewarding experience that extends far beyond the workshop. It’s about patience, precision, and the joy of creating something truly unique with your own hands.
At the Utah School of Lutherie, you won’t just learn to build an instrument—you’ll learn the art of creating an heirloom.

The de Houtwinkel Legacy: Where Craft Meets Creation
The same principles of passion and uncompromising quality that define our school also define every de Houtwinkel instrument. While you are learning to build, you are also becoming a part of a legacy of craftsmanship.
Why are de Houtwinkel instruments superior?
They are not just instruments; they are a culmination of a master luthier’s expertise, meticulous attention to detail, and a deep respect for the wood itself.
Handcrafted Perfection:
Each de Houtwinkel guitar and ukulele is individually handcrafted by master luthier Daryl vanderGroef. This is a stark contrast to the mass-produced instruments that dominate the market. The result is an instrument with a unique character and a soul that is simply unattainable through factory processes.
Unrivaled Materials:
We start with a foundation of excellence. Every instrument is built using the finest AAAA-grade tonewoods, carefully selected for their acoustic properties and visual beauty. The quality of the wood directly translates to the richness of the tone and the instrument’s overall responsiveness. All of our wood is tested in-house using a sophisticated sonic testing procedure…more info below.
Superior Sound and Playability:
With over a decade of experience, Daryl knows how to bring out the very best in every piece of wood. The precise carving, meticulous bracing, and expert finishing all contribute to a balanced, resonant sound and a level of playability that feels effortless in your hands.
A de Houtwinkel instrument is more than an object; it is an investment in sound and a testament to the timeless art of lutherie. It is a true partner for your musical journey.
Why We Sonically Test All Our Tonewood
At the Utah School of Lutherie, every piece of tonewood is sonically tested in-house to ensure it will deliver the best possible sound.
Sonic testing measures a wood’s resonant frequency, stiffness-to-weight ratio, and damping properties—key indicators of how it will perform once shaped into an instrument. Even wood from the same species, cut from the same log, can vary dramatically. By testing, we identify which pieces are bright and lively, which are warm and mellow, and which will pair well together in a single instrument.
This process allows us to:
Select for tone, not just looks – visually striking wood isn’t always acoustically strong.
Match tops, backs, and sides – ensuring the wood resonates in harmony.
Guarantee consistency – so every instrument begins with proven, reliable materials.
By combining traditional lutherie skills with modern acoustic analysis, we remove the guesswork from tonewood selection. The result is instruments that not only look beautiful, but also respond with clarity, balance, and a voice that inspires.
